DMSO Proper Use, Preparation, and Cleanliness Requirements
Proper application of DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) can significantly enhance its effectiveness in soothing inflammation, reducing nerve pain, and speeding up muscle recovery. When using DMSO topically, correct technique, preparation, and aftercare are crucial—not only to maximize benefits but to avoid any undesirable side effects. Each targeted area—whether joints, muscles, or nerves—has nuances in application that influence outcomes.
Before beginning any application, it is essential to prepare both the skin and workspace. Skin should be thoroughly cleaned using mild soap and warm water, free from residues like lotions, perfumes, or oils. Ensure to rinse the area thoroughly with clean water for a few minutes after using soap so that any soap residue can rinse away. DMSO carries ANY substances through the skin and into the bloodstream, so any contaminants on the skin may be unintentionally absorbed if the application area is not very clean and rinsed.
Use a lint-free cloth or cotton pad to dry the area completely. Do not use polyester, you can use natural materials to dry and apply such as cotton or bamboo towels, cotton balls, cotton rounds, gauze, or a clean-natural cotton gloved hand (that can be rewashed for reuse with a final diluted vinegar-rinse.)
Prepare your area: Set a timer, towel, and dedicated clean application space to keep the process hygienic and consistent. Set a natural fiber cloth towel on a chair or bedside so that any drops or excess can be easily absorbed as DMSO is a very light fluid (lighter than just water so it will run off the skin fast.)
When addressing joints such as knees, wrists, or finger joints often affected by arthritis, application is best done using circular motions. Use just enough DMSO to lightly coat the area—a teaspoon is typically sufficient for a knee, while fingers need only a few drops. Apply with gentle, circular pressure, allowing the solution to absorb without saturating the skin. Wait 20–30 minutes before covering the area with clothing, ideally letting it air dry. If your clothing is not made with a 100% natural fiber such as cotton or bamboo, just add a little extra time for the area to dry before putting on clothes.
DMSO use for Arthritis Management
For arthritis management, apply a few drops of DMSO on the hands or the toes, two to three times daily, spacing applications at least six hours apart. On the feet you can add more so that the entire foot is lightly covered. It is found best to reapply a light coat after a few minutes, if desired, by adding multiple light coats than applying too much all at once. Allow a few seconds for the DMSO to penetrate rather than evaporating into the air.
NooTroXX has also found that a light spray of NooTroXX Magnesium Myst 3-5 minutes after the last DMSO application, helps enormously for arthritis, neuropathy or overworked feet and muscles.

DMSO use for Workouts and Post Recovery
Muscle recovery, especially in areas like the calves or shoulders, benefits most from linear, massage-like strokes that follow the direction of the muscle fibers. This technique helps deliver the DMSO deeper into the tissues. For a large muscle group, a half-teaspoon to one teaspoon per area (7-10 drops) is sufficient. Athletes and those recovering from strain can apply DMSO once immediately before or after exercise and repeat in the evening. Continue this routine for up to five days post-exertion, pausing if skin sensitivity occurs.
When treating nerve-related pain in the back or feet—such as with sciatic discomfort or neuropathy—delivery should be both careful and consistent. Use a soft applicator to gently apply DMSO in circular motions around the affected nerve pathway. For spinal nerve discomfort, apply along the lower back or neck with minimal pressure. Avoid over-saturating; half a teaspoon (5-7 drops) is plenty for the lumbar region. For foot neuropathy, thinly coat the top and sole of the foot without rubbing and a light spray of NooTroXX Magnesium Myst 3-5 minutes after the last DMSO Application. This routine can be performed twice per day, every morning and night. Symptom improvements often appear after one week of regular use.
After applying DMSO, be mindful to leave the area uncovered for at least 30 minutes to avoid trapping heat or moisture, which could lead to irritation. Do not wash the skin for a minimum of one hour post-application, as this allows full absorption and prevents washing away any active ingredient prematurely. Clothing that touches the area after application should be clean and breathable—cotton is ideal. If you experience itching, redness, or a garlic-like taste in your mouth (a common, harmless side effect), monitor it closely; if irritation worsens, reduce frequency or consult a health professional.
When deciding to reapply or increase use, follow a gradual approach. Start with one application per day and observe your body’s response.
